Abstract art by Swedish painter Eva Ryn Johannissen. Contemporary painting using oil on canvas

Contemporary abstract art on canvas

In my work I build on a long tradition of abstract art. Paintings had become increasingly abstract for centuries when abstraction made its final break through in the 20th century. In the contemporary art world, where artists are free to choose between a whealth of new meda, I feel that abstract canvas art still harbours tremendous potential to translate the contemporary experience of life into a visual language that goes beyond mere words.

Non-representational, abstract art

To me it is a fascinating aspect of contemporary abstract art that it can be a powerful means to reach the many hidden layers of non-objective experience that help shape our inner life. I find non-representational abstract art on canvas particularly well suited to explore and express emotions and the inner life.

Eva Ryn Johannissen

The abstract mindscapes of the Beginning and End Series were inspired by themes from Nordic mythology.

Abstract art - abstraction: "Imagery which departs from representational accuracy to a variable range of possible degrees."
